Questboard - August 2021
QuestBoard is an app you can download onto your smartphones. Each month, people around town will posts jobs asking for help with various tasks like building furniture, running errands, pet sitting, and more. Characters can make a living off of this if they choose to and assume normal day-to-day tasks you would normally find on an app IRL like TaskRabbit. Handwaved tasks do not earn credit toward gaining a title, but the special tasks labeled as this month's "Top Tasks" in the app will gain clout for your character.
QuestBoard Top Tasks are the ones that are posted at the start of each month. Any character may complete them, even if they seem like a unique task, because time being frozen and magic mayhem are a recipe for weird time pockets resulting in multiple occurrences in the same space. (Tl;dr there are no dibs, just have fun.) There are three kinds of tasks, each labeled with a symbol for its type:
= COMBAT QUEST (counts toward Knighthood OR Unseelie)
= ASSISTANCE QUEST (counts toward Nobility OR Arcane Mage)
= SPECIAL (see quest details)
☀️ August Top Tasks 🥵
🍄 Dark Web Tasks 💻Not the goody two-shoes type? Every realm that has the internet also has a dark web-- a place where illegal opportunities are rife for the taking. Characters may hear about how to access the dark web if they are going around trying to get involved in criminal activity. This is an alternate option for characters who would not seek out nobility or knighthood and wish to take a darker path toward the titles of Unseelie or Arcane Mage.
Note that while characters may complete tasks from either the QuestBoard or the Dark Web, they can only choose either Nobility/Knighthood titles OR Unseelie/Arcane Mage titles.
= COMBAT QUEST (counts toward Knighthood OR Unseelie)
= ASSISTANCE QUEST (counts toward Nobility OR Arcane Mage)
= SPECIAL (see quest details)Combat and assistance quests are the most common and will appear every month. Specials are tasks that either fit both categories, neither category, or has some kind of exceptional reward. Special tasks are uncommon, so do not expect to see them all the time.
Each quest is worth 1 Rewards point unless your character has achieved Knighthood or Nobility status (See FAQ for more information), which both double rewards points.
Do not reply to this post to do a quest. Just thread out the quest and turn it in as instructed on the Rewards Points (Elphame Traders) page when you are ready to redeem. Threads must be started in the month that the quest was announced, though it may start at any day during the month and you may backtag as necessary. Feel free to reply to this post with questions about Top Tasks.

Don't Treep, Man | Thanks to the unfortunate undead incident last month in the farmland, a fair amount of the crops were destroyed. At this rate, the entire city of Camelot will be on rations for the rest of the year. We need green mages to encourage growth and revive the torn up fields and orchards as we approach Pomona's Day on the 13th. Animal mages can help by herding lost animals back to the farms. Everyone else can help by repairing fences, equipment, watering, or anything else you can think of. (Even making some sweet lemonade for the laborers helping would be great!) The tree people of the Dusklight Woods come down on Pomona's Day to get their share of the harvest in exchange for keeping the forest from overgrowing and provide Camelot with its annual supply of fertile land potions to make sure no matter what the weather, the land is ready to grow.
Hot Nights | Party people, we are in need of a little lightheartedness. Share your 1. lamest pick-up line and 2. a line that would work on you on AOL. I'm paying in magic-- I'll teach anyone who makes someone laugh, gets a date, or has a good conversation because of it how to cast (Recipe) Hot Night, a spell that exacerbates attraction between you and anyone else who feels it. It doesn't create it, so it's nothing sketchy, it just makes it more obvious to get things going. A little love and laughter is what we need right now. Don't forget to tag your post with #MerlinQuest -Merlin
Invasive Species(CW: Culling animals) | There is way too big a population of woodland creatures in the Broceliande after an extremely... uh, fruitful springtime! They've started moving out toward the nearby lake and drawing Carcinuses, a species of giant scorpion-tailed crab monsters that live in the lake and are enjoying the new feast. The further onto land they get, the more they disrupt the food chain, so please get the Carcinuses back to the lake and off the land by any means possible. Bonus pay if you can get the woodland creatures back to the woods, too. (OOC Note: The Carcinuses are just hungry, so their logic is going to largely be 'but food' if any animal mages ask.)
Not-So-Good Morning(CW: Corpses and murder) | Early birds trying to get the worms are finding someone's attempt to feed the worms... that is to say, corpses are being strung up around Camelot in the dead of night. Local law enforcement are asking for anyone able to investigate and share information about who it might be. This person is clearly dangerous, so if you witness someone doing it, make sure to contact authorities so you don't put yourself in danger! (OOC: Player-plot! For questions, comment here to communicate with Emet-Selch and Hythlodaeus's players, Chips and tonake, or check out the log post for general player-event info!) |
🍄 Dark Web Tasks 💻
Note that while characters may complete tasks from either the QuestBoard or the Dark Web, they can only choose either Nobility/Knighthood titles OR Unseelie/Arcane Mage titles.
| Task Name | Details | |
Private Messages (CW: Public humiliation, blackmail) | Technomancers and hackers alike will love this task... hack someone's private messages and threaten to post them publicly on AOL if they don't leave a briefcase with 250,000G in it at the park. You can keep any of the money in it, I just need the briefcases for a spell. Humiliation energy is great for making strong ritual curses!
Crystal Mushroom(CW: Violence, drugs.) | Wicked Wendy, a criminal known for selling top notch crystal mushroom, has ripped me off for the last time. I don't know what she's gotten into lately, but this last batch was cut with cheap materials and I've got customers ready to get balls-to-the-walls out of their mind exploring the space from their bedrooms. (Think virtual reality No Man's Sky where nothing bad ever happens.) I need someone to rough her the hell up and make sure she gets back to selling the real deal by the end of the month. It's important to send a message.
Animal Mage Hunt(CW: Murdering of animal mages) | A group of animal mages has decided to cast a ritual curse to give a huge chunk of Camelot's population animal ears, tails, and other parts. (I saw a poor guy who got milky teats like a cow the other day!) It's turning me on so bad I can't function. I can't go to work anymore! I'm sure I'm not the only one. There are two ways to break the spell, and the easiest one is to kill the main mage who cast it. Go around killing animal mages until you get the ring leader! (OOC Note: you can also choose to have your character affected by the curse, have a ball.)

Plotting for Not-So-Good Morning

Are there ghosts related to corpses around and if yes what would a death mage glean if anything?
no subject
Which is in itself a clue that you are dealing with a Death mage!

But Yuber CR is opt-in, I don't want to toss him at people who might not be interested.
no subject
By finding him later, do you mean after the whole affair is over or after corpse discovery?
no subject
And I mean after the whole affair is over! Yuber is a curious sort of creature and would think the murders are exciting so he might poke his nose into it a little, asking any spirits if they know what's up but he's not a crime solver.
...And honestly even if he managed to put together it was Emet-Selch he'd do literally nothing to stop Emet or alert the authorities so the whole thing would still play out anyway.
no subject
But yes, Yuber can absolutely approach Emet later! He could visit him in prison or catch him after he's been sentenced and let out. If you want to do your own prompt on the log that's fine too btw, I'm easy.

...Both Suikoden and Shadowbringers steal a lot from Moorcock.

The Amaurot lore is so good though don't get me startedYuber's reasons for Being Like That are not as sympathetic as the Ascians. There isn't a self-sacrificing bone in the man's body, for one. He wants an end to his own suffering and will team up with people for centuries at a time but in the end Yuber only looks out for Yuber.

juzo's pretty distinctive and not trying to hide it so emet will have seen him around each of the crime scenes, poking around, talking to authorities and possible witnesses, trying to forge connections, that kind of thing.
he will also be keeping an eye out for faces that keep showing up at the crime scenes so it's very likely he'll notice emet skulking about. i'd love for them to have some sort of confrontation. i also feel like juzo will pay him a visit after he gets hauled off to prison to figure out wtf all this mess was about.
also i suppose i should ask if there's anything additional he'd be able to glean in all his investigating? he's no death mage so there's no communing with the dead. he's doing all this the old fashioned way.
you can also hmu via pm if you want!

It seems no one person has managed to catch every corpse being put up. After the first couple, people report seeing the dead hang themselves during the first week and they all happen at different times of night. At this point, it is not obvious someone else is necessarily killing them because the ones who hang themselves have definitely died through strangulation and the stage of rigor mortis they are at is consistent with when they are witnessed to have 'died'.
For the big four however, someone cloaked seems to have been witnessed near the scenes shortly before discovery. Understandably though, no-one wanted to approach and confront them at the time.
From examining the last four corpses, Juzo can get a lot more clues. None of them were killed where they are eventually found as there is not enough blood for that. They also have definitely been dead for at least a day.
The lacquer-covered one is the biggest indicator the culprit is an alchemist as it is impossible to cure that much lacquer within a day - although it is certainly possible the victim was killed a while back and preserved immediately. (I am not knowledgeable enough about this stuff to say if it's possible to tell or not.)
I'm happy to have Juzo confront him at some point. Did you mean at the scene of the crime or in a fight? I will be trying to prioritise the tags from this log for the month to keep things moving promptly.
Let me know if you had specific questions about the situation!
no subject
re: confrontation, i was thinking that juzo wouldn't confront him out in the open. maybe tail him a bit (if possible) and try to pull him aside somewhere secluded to question. he won't fight unless it comes to that. rn he's just after information.

BUT YES this is mainly just to say that if you wanted to take that route I would be delighted to thread something out with you! Juzo also generally seems a really neat character and I would love to have CR with him. :D Even if I don't know if Hythlodaeus is the best fit for that, but I am slowly thinking of yeeting more characters at the game, so. eyes emoji

that said, if you want to actually thread out some kind of follow-up after emet has been jailed or even just look out for juzo on the event or something else, that works for me! (for the former, his ic inbox is always open.) we can just assume they talked before, albeit briefly!
