The Main difference here being the dragon as a really low-hanging, trigger-inducing fruit. "I hate dragons. But they taste good." And he has some very, very good reasons to hate them. Symbols of greed, gluttony, wrath, pride and so on. And of course for anyone that's even passingly familiar with the Beowulf story there was a rampaging dragon he had to kill after it scorched most of his country and killed scores of people. As far as he's concerned they're pests that should be killed on sight and the one in the cave is like a ticking bomb.
That said! He's unlikely to outright make the locals upset. Though if someone decides to get a bit too close to it or steal something he's probably going to lash out against it. So! If anyone's interested in plotting out a dumpster fire like that let me know!
